ABOUTME

My name is Jessica Twynam and I am currently female second year undergraduate student at Texas Christian University. I am from Chatham, NJ. I am studying Early Childhood Education with a minor in Deaf Studies. I have always wanted to be a teacher and am very passionate about this field. Growing up with female teachers guiding me has inspired me to become that mentor for young children!

INFLUENCE

I believe that some of the most important years of our lives are our early schooling years, specifically Kindergarten through third grade. These years we develop not only physically, but socially and mentally as well, and we can thank our teachers for being there for us through this time period, and helping us build our early knowledge. From kindergarten through third grade, I had female teachers who helped me each and every day of elementary school and kept a bright smile on their face as each one of their students walked into the classroom every morning. All 4 of these women have influenced me to become an elementary teacher one day! I hope my campaign informs and changes your POV on women in the education field, and the male to female ratio within the entirety of the field.

Mentor Text

While a number of articles and blogs have inspired me to make my campaign come to life, this infographic inspired to me to make one of my own. I feel as though fliers/infographics are one of the most influential methods to communicate an idea, influencing me to create my own!

Letter to my Kindergarten Self

I decided to create a personal aspect for this platform, and write a letter to my Kindergarten self. This short letter truly embodies the desire and aspiration I have always had to become a teacher.

Jess! I cannot believe I can finally say this but we are making it happen! Currently, we are a Sophomore college student at Texas Christian University, studying Early Childhood Education which means we are going to become a teacher soooo soon! I know this is all we have dreamed about since being in Mrs Izsa’s Kindergarten class, and thinking about how cool it was to be a teacher, especially that she got to decorate her own classroom (I know, we get to finally do it too). This dream of ours that you have just begun to develop has stuck with us for all of these years. Soon you will move onto first grade with your amazing teacher, you will want to be just like her, and have the same opportunity she has now. From there, you will move onto Middle School which isn’t so great, tests and quizzes will make it harder than Elementary school, but you will still meet some amazing teachers who will help you get through. As we grew up people started to ask more frequently what we wanted to do in the future, to which I always proudly replied with the same answer, “I really want to be a teacher”  and through all of the “are you sure? Do you really have the patience for that? Why do you want to be a teacher, think of the salary..” And countless more questions, we always, without hesitation, had the same answer, which is what I am most proud of us for achieving. We now have about 2.5 years left of school until we can finally make this dream of ours come true. I cannot wait until this happens, but I want you to know that whatever doubts you have during high school about this major, and all of those hard days when you just don’t want to get up and go to school, it’s all worth it in the end because we are so, so close to finally doing what we always dreamed of.

                      Sincerely, Future You
